Introduction:

This 17th C. building dates from before the Leek road and the Macclesfield Canal were built in the early 19th C. Located only yards from the canal, this is a very popular overnight stop for boaters. Beautifully re-furbished in July 2006. Open Monday-Saturday 12-3pm, 6.30pm to midnight, Sunday 12-12. See below for food hours.

The name is thought to originate from the last jester, or fool, in a stately home, namely nearby Gawsworth Hall. Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson possibly took his ale in a corner, or nook, within this pub! Maggoty is a famed local character and he is buried up at Gawsworth.

Brews:

The cask ales are likely to be rotated but on my visit they had excellent Duchar's IPA, Black Sheep and Draught Bass. For lager lovers they had Grolsch and Carling, together with Guinness and Strongbow cider. Fully licensed.

Food:

Good food; lunch and evening menu with daily specials, served seven days a week. Monday-Saturday 12-2pm, 7-9pm, Sunday 12-2.30pm, 7-9pm.

Other facilities:

The family courtyard at the rear of the Inn is a warm and wind free spot. Good size car park.

On A523 Leek road, two miles south of Macclesfield, at Oak Grove, Sutton. At Oak Grove swing bridge 49 on the Macclesfield Canal. Plenty of casual moorings south of the bridge. Accident blackspot! Cross the main road with great care! Please supervise children!!
